New Sod Care & Watering Instruction Guide
The first few weeks after sod installation are critical. This is when roots establish into the soil, and proper watering makes the difference between a lawn that struggles and one that thrives. At Local Roots Lawn Maintenance, most follow-up questions after sod installs come down to watering — which is completely normal.
Below are our care and watering guidelines to help your new lawn root properly and green up fast!

Water Daily During the First 1–2 Weeks
- New sod should be watered daily during the first one to two weeks after installation. This is the most critical window for root development. Each watering cycle should soak the soil to a depth of about 6 inches. Surface moisture alone isn’t enough — roots need water deeper in the soil to anchor and grow.
- If you’re unsure whether you’re watering deeply enough, gently lift a corner of the sod and check the moisture level underneath. The soil should be wet, not muddy.
Adjust Watering Based on Your Yard & Irrigation System
No two yards water the same. Your irrigation schedule and runtime should be adjusted based on:
- Soil type and condition
- Yard slope or drainage
- Sprinkler head type and coverage
- Sun exposure and temperature
- If parts of your lawn dry out faster than others — especially edges, corners, or sloped areas — that’s normal. These spots often need extra attention early on.
Hose-End Sprinklers & Manual Watering
- If you’re using a hose-end sprinkler, it’s crucial to understand how much water your system is actually delivering. One simple way to do this is to place shallow containers (like tuna cans) around the yard and measure how long it takes to collect about an inch of water. This helps you dial in a realistic runtime.
- Some areas may still need supplemental hand watering, especially during hot or windy weather. Targeted watering with a hose and sprayer can prevent stress before it becomes visible damage.
Use Cycle-Soak Watering When Needed
- If your yard has slopes, compacted soil, or you notice water running off instead of soaking in, a cycle-soak method can help. This means breaking watering into shorter cycles with rest periods in between. It allows water to be absorbed gradually instead of pooling or running off, improving soil penetration and root development.
Best Time of Day to Water
- Watering is most effective early in the morning, ideally between 2:00 AM and 10:00 AM. Watering in the morning helps to:
- Reduce water loss from heat and wind
- Allows moisture to soak in before midday sun
- Helps prevent fungal issues that can develop with evening watering
*Avoid watering late in the evening whenever possible.
Watch for Stress & Respond Early
- It’s normal for new sod to show signs of stress during the first couple of weeks, especially in warm weather. If you notice areas turning dull, wilting, or drying faster than others, increase watering in those spots right away!
- Catching stress early is much easier than trying to fix damage later.
A Quick Reminder:
- The first 1–2 weeks after installation are the most important. Consistent, deep watering during this time sets the foundation for:
- Strong root development
- Faster green-up
- Better long-term lawn health
